Battery storage power plants in the United States

Battery storage units in the 2025 EIA-860 data total 43.7 GW of nameplate capacity, 3.2% of the US fleet. It is the main source at 605 plants; California has the most, with 14.9 GW. More of today’s battery storage capacity came online in 2025 than in any other year (16.4 GW). The oldest unit still working went into service in 2003 at Battery Energy Storage System, Alaska.
