Other-fuel units in the 2025 EIA-860 data total 3,602 MW of nameplate capacity, 0.3% of the US fleet. It is the main source at 71 plants; Louisiana has the most, with 669 MW. More of today’s other-fuel capacity came online in 2001 than in any other year (246 MW). The oldest unit still working went into service in 1925 at Sinclair Oil Refinery, Wyoming.
When today’s other-fuel capacity was built
Above the line: capacity still operable in 2025, by the year each unit came online. Below: other-fuel capacity retired in each year, including plants that have closed completely (EIA’s retired-generator file).
